October 30, 2018

Thomson Reuters Legal Tracker ™ recognized client innovation and legal operations excellence at the seventh annual Golden Cheetah Awards, presented as part of the Legal Tracker Summit in Seattle on October 9, 2018.

The 2018 Golden Cheetah Awards recognized nine companies for their outstanding achievements. This year’s recipients were selected for the challenges they tackled, the results they delivered, and the value they brought to their companies. In addition to the Golden Cheetah winner, Legal Tracker awarded second place, third place, and a Sprint Award (given to the most successful new client). Five companies also received honorable mentions for their robust use of Tracker in tackling legal department initiatives.

The Golden Cheetah First Place Award went to Zimmer Biomet for successfully completing a cost-savings initiative leveraging Legal Tracker and services from Mosaic Consulting and The Counsel Management Group. As a result of this initiative, Zimmer realized $2.5M in savings through improved budgeting and AFAs built on insights from invoice data through Tracker reporting. Another outcome of the project was Zimmer’s ability to leverage data analytics to develop cost models and efficiency assessments for matters with a projected legal spend of over $100K. According to Lisa Dunkin, Senior Litigation Counsel for Zimmer Biomet, this project was a tremendous success. “It’s exciting to see how we’ve been able to merge the ‘science’ of data with the ‘art’ of lawyering. It has enabled us to improve law firm value, while maintaining high quality legal services.” It should be noted that the Zimmer team leading this project included Andrea Kochensparger, Division General Counsel and Head of Legal Operations, and Brandee Martinsky, Litigation Paralegal.

Allegis Group was awarded Second Place for its cost savings initiative that resulted in over $600K in savings. This initiative was led by Mary Riggin, Legal Assistant at Allegis Group. Third Place went to Rabo AgriFinance for leveraging Tracker to manage the merge of two legal departments as a result of a major corporate reorganization. The results of this initiative included $170K in savings, increased efficiencies through legal department-wide use of matter management, and push-button reporting. Leadership for this initiative came from Leia Anderson, Senior Paralegal.

Hertz Corporation received the Sprint Award for its impressive implementation of Tracker that included global e-billing and matter management in just 53 days from start to go-live. In conjunction with the Tracker implementation, Hertz also roll out a Preferred Law Firm Network with visibility into the matters, spend, and type of work that preferred law firms are working on. As a result, Hertz is now able to effectively communicate with law firms and notify leadership of metrics and analytics. According to the Hertz team: “The amount of reporting that we can now generate exceeded our expectations and continues to provide more and more details on our e-billing and matter management activities.” It should be noted that Erik Eisenhart on the Hertz team successfully led the project in collaboration with the Legal Tracker team. Honorable mentions went to the following companies for outstanding performance and legal operations excellence:

  • BBA Aviation USA, Inc. – Initiative led by Theresa Kassim, Office Manager and Executive Assistant
  • CommScope – Initiative led by Kelly Vezendy, Manager, Legal Business Operations
  • Gap Inc. – Initiative led by Mike Haven, Senior Director, Head of Legal Business Operations and Caitlin Martinez, Analyst, Legal Operations
